ICT is the key European event dedicated to networking and promoting research and innovation in the field of Information and Communication Technologies, focusing on the European Union’s priorities in the digital transformation of society and industry, and represents an opportunity for the people involved in this transformation to share their experience and vision of Europe in the digital age. The 2018 edition, ICT 2018: Imagine Digital – Connect Europe, will take place in Vienna on 4-6 December 2018, mostly dealing with the Horizon 2020 Work Programme 2018-20, including ICT calls across all three pillars of Horizon 2020.

The event, organised by the European Commission’s Directorate-General for Communications Networks, Content and Technology in cooperation with the Austrian Presidency, will have the following main components:

  • a conference on digital research and innovation policies,
  • an exhibition of EU-funded research and innovation projects in the field of ICT,
  • a series of networking activities,
  • an innovation and startups village to showcase European entrepreneurship.

Among these, ICT 2018 is hosting the networking session Virtual reality for innovative usages of movement analysis (Room 2.31, 5 December, 09:00-09:45), which will explore ways in which IT, in conjuncture with virtual (VR) and mixed reality (MR) applications, can help preserve, integrate, re-use and convey forms of European cultural heritage, such as dance art and related cultural assets. More specifically, the session aims at establishing research and industry collaborations stemming from WhoLoDancE outcomes. The session will aim at analysing how, starting from such a concrete basis, it can be possible to establish a scalable, decentralised library of annotated motion capture files along with tools to edit, blend, sell, and distribute real-world body motions and the tools to leverage them into an algorithmic marketplace.

The goal is to see how eventually to allow artists, craftsmen, athletes, or anyone able to perform skilful movements, to capture their performance in local motion-capture environments, to upload such content into a quality controlled, integrated environment, and share it with a global audience, leveraging trends in motion-capture wide-spread utilisation in industries such as animation, gaming, virtual reality, digital fashion, performance training system, rehabilitation, robotics, etc.

ICT 2018 will offer an exceptional occasion to build quality partnerships as it will connect academia, research institutes, industrial stakeholders, SMEs and government actors from all over Europe. The event is free of charge but registration is required.
